LevanProgramme at 21:00, 4th July 2003 on UK TV Channel 5.

Last part of the 'finest' series where Professor Richard Holmes presents the British castles voted by the public to be our 10 finest examples.

Includes Windsor, Alnwick (Harry Potter) and the Tower of London. The top three are a secret until tonight.

We'll see...

AJRWill have a peek at that tonight. Thanks.
deborahknowlesWarwick wins! I thought it was a good choice. It's a fantastic castle and has great jousting tournaments

------------------

MotteWarwick is a great castle (and just down the road from me) but, personally, I don't think it is the best. Possibly one of the best preserved (or restored) but for me, the Tussauds treatment spoils it. Give me Caernarfon, Conwy or Harlech any day.
ipflowhich were the others one of the top three

and also I think warwick is a good choice for the finest castle of britain, but I also like british castles as rochester, dirleton and kenilworth. And ofcourse bodiam, because of the old ivanhoe show with roger moore I believe

castleukHi
Enjoyed the show, the hour and a half was about right, when he was walking around Kenilworth i thought its got to be the winner but not even in the top ten! thats got to be wrong.
For me Caernarfon is the best site i've been visited, Warwick's very good but for me it the cost to get in that spoils it.
Give me a ruin or a motte and bailey any day.

LevanThink the programme's order was like this (not quite sure, to be honest):

Honourable mentions to Stirling and Dover then.
10 Conwy
9 Caernarfon
8 Alnwick
7 Bodiam
6 Windsor
5 Tower of London
4 Eileen Donan
3 Tintagel
2 Edinburgh
1 Warwick

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the programme - I especially enjoyed the enthusiasm of some of the guest presenters, Magnus Magnason was absolutly buzzing at Edinburgh Castle.

As for the results? Hmm - I guess a better title for the programme would have been Britain's Best known/most popular castles. I think this was especially reinforced by the inclusion of:

Eileen Donan (an imaginative recreation),

Tintagel (presumably because of its mythalogical connections - instead of airtime being given to Arthurian tosh, it would've been nice to get some real factual information)

Bodiam (not really a castle at all from a defensive perspecive - still a delightful building though).

In fairness, the programme did point out this information.

Now Warwick, Conwy and Caernarfon - feel these truly deserved their places as Britain's finest. The others too are amongst my favourites, but I'm sure they'ed have been displaced by other examples if the list was wholy down to me - takes all sorts though!

AlbertEdwardFrom the 14th century until the reign of Charles II, a procession would be led from the Tower of London to Westminster Abbey on the coronation of a monarch.
